FIRE GUTS TWO VEHICLES AT ILORIN MOTOR PARK
Agency Report

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Saturday destroyed two vehicles at a motor park located at Sawmill Garage in the Odo-Okun area of Ilorin, Kwara State.
Officials of the Kwara State Fire Service responded swiftly to the incident after receiving a distress call at about 2:48 a.m. reporting a blaze at the busy motor park, which accommodates several commercial vehicles.
The Public Relations Officer of the fire service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday, noting that firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene.
According to him, upon arrival, the fire crew discovered that two vehicles had already been affected by the blaze, a Toyota Sienna and an 18-seater commercial bus with registration numbers JJJ876HJ and KSF223SK.
Adekunle said preliminary information from the driver of the affected bus indicated that the vehicle had returned from a long-distance journey the previous afternoon and was parked at the motor park while awaiting passengers for another trip.
He explained that the driver was asleep when he suddenly noticed that the bus had caught fire in the early hours of the morning.
People at the garage immediately attempted to prevent the fire from spreading by moving other vehicles away from the burning bus, but a Toyota Sienna parked nearby also caught fire during the incident.
Firefighters were, however, able to contain the blaze within minutes, bringing the situation under control by about 3:03 a.m. and preventing the fire from spreading to other vehicles parked at the garage.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, urged vehicle owners and transport operators to take preventive measures against similar incidents.
He advised them to regularly inspect vehicles for electrical faults or fuel leakages, especially after long-distance trips, and to maintain safe parking distances while ensuring the availability of fire extinguishers at motor parks.
The incident adds to recent fire outbreaks recorded in the state, including a blaze earlier in the week that destroyed six shops and goods worth millions of naira at Owode Market in Offa, Oyun Local Government Area.
