In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been adopted as the unifying platform for Nigeria’s opposition coalition, with former Senate President David Mark and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola appointed as interim national chairman and interim national secretary, respectively.

The development was announced at a high-profile opposition meeting held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where former ADC national chairman, Chief Ralph Nwosu, officially handed over party leadership and presented membership cards to Mark and Aregbesola.

The gathering brought together key political figures from across major opposition parties, including the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; Labour Party’s Peter Obi; former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai; and former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

Other notable attendees included Senator Dino Melaye, former Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung, media personality Dele Momodu, Senator Gabriel Suswam, Labour Party’s Senator Ireti Kingibe, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Emeka Ihedioha, and retired Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Also present were politicians from the PDP, Labour Party (LP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), signalling a broad-based coalition with the intent of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

With the formal resignation of David Mark from the PDP and his adoption into ADC leadership alongside Aregbesola, the coalition appears to be setting the stage for a united opposition front in the next electoral cycle.
