The trial of Chidinma Ojukwu, the first defendant in the alleged murder of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Usifo Ataga, continued before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of the Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Annex, on Monday.
During the resumed proceedings, the cross-examination of Ojukwu who is standing trial alongside two others focused on her earlier claims regarding the ownership and sale of the late Ataga’s devices, including a MacBook and several iPhones.
Under cross-examination by the prosecution counsel, Mr Yusuf Sule, Ojukwu affirmed that the deceased trusted her with his personal belongings whenever they met. She admitted that Ataga had his iPhone and MacBook with him on the days they met but insisted that some of the devices in question belonged to her.
When questioned about the receipts for the gadgets, Ojukwu told the court that while the receipt for the MacBook was listed by the police in their exhibit file, it was never tendered in court. She further explained that she had thought she lost the original receipt but later got a replacement from the vendor, UC Best Computers.
Pressed further, Ojukwu confirmed that she sold the MacBook on June 18, 2021 two days after Ataga’s body was discovered for ₦495,000, claiming she was unaware of his death at the time. She also admitted to giving an iPhone 7 to her sister shortly after the incident.
Mr Sule questioned why Ojukwu never informed the police, her family, or anyone about Ataga’s death despite being the last person seen with him. In her response, she maintained that she was scared and denied taking any of the deceased’s belongings or transferring money from his account.
Ojukwu also confirmed that she made two statements to the police one written by the Investigating Police Officer and another dictated to her by the police but claimed parts of the statements were false.
The courtroom session grew tense as she was shown a picture of the deceased. When asked to identify it, Ojukwu quietly replied, “Mr. Ataga.”
After the prosecution paused the day’s cross-examination, Justice Adesanya adjourned the matter till November 25, 2025, for continuation of trial.
