A doctor, Olusina Ajidahun, has clarified the meaning of palliative care following claims by the daughters of veteran Yoruba actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, that hospitals had stopped treating their father, who is battling stage-four cancer.

Ajidahun, who is known as The Bearded Dr Sina on X, said the family’s description of the situation could be misunderstood, particularly the assertion that hospitals had refused to treat the actor.

In a post on Monday, the doctor explained that patients with advanced cancer may be placed on palliative care after chemotherapy and other available treatment options have been considered.

He said palliative care focuses on managing symptoms, easing discomfort and improving the quality of life of patients with serious or terminal illnesses.

According to him, describing the situation as hospitals refusing to treat Ogogo could create a negative impression of the medical team and expose healthcare workers to unnecessary hostility.

He urged the family and the public to work closely with the doctors managing the actor’s condition.

Ajidahun also cautioned against the use of unverified herbal remedies for stage-four cancer, warning that such treatments could worsen a patient’s condition, damage other organs and lead to additional complications.

He explained that stage-four cancer occurs when the disease has spread from the organ where it originated to other parts of the body.

The doctor expressed sympathy with Ogogo’s family and wished them strength as they navigate the actor’s health challenges.

He clarified that he was not part of Ogogo’s medical team and that his comments were based solely on the videos shared by the actor’s daughters.

The comments followed separate appeals by Ogogo’s daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, for medical assistance for their father.

In a video shared on Instagram on Monday, Lima said the actor’s condition had deteriorated and claimed that hospitals were no longer willing to treat him.

She appealed to people with connections to healthcare providers to help secure treatment for her father, stressing that the family was seeking medical assistance rather than financial donations.

In a separate video, Kira disclosed that her father had been diagnosed with stage-four cancer and said the hospital had informed the family that he could no longer receive chemotherapy.

She appealed to medical professionals and facilities capable of treating cancer to assist the actor, saying the family was willing to explore available options.

Kira also became emotional while describing her father’s condition, saying she had never seen him experience such severe pain and that he had expressed fear of dying.

Taiwo Hassan, 66, is a veteran actor whose career spans more than four decades. He has featured in hundreds of Nigerian films and remains one of the prominent figures in Yoruba cinema.
