The Edo State Police Command has begun a full-scale manhunt for the gunmen who killed a police inspector during a routine stop-and-search operation on Friday.
In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed that the inspector, attached to the Ekiadolor Area Command, was shot at close range by an occupant of an unregistered, black, heavily tinted Lexus SUV that refused to stop when flagged down around 12 p.m.
According to the statement, the vehicle’s suspicious behaviour prompted officers to insist on carrying out standard security checks. However, one of the occupants suddenly opened fire on the inspector before speeding off.
Yamu said the Command has deployed all available intelligence and operational resources to track down the perpetrators, describing the attack as a “heinous crime.”
Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika urged residents to remain alert and report any sightings of the SUV to the nearest police station or via the command’s emergency hotlines: 08037646272 or 08077773721.
He also appealed for public cooperation with security agencies, assuring that the police will continue to work tirelessly to protect lives and property, especially during the festive season.
Agbonika stressed that the Command “will not relent until the criminals behind this attack are brought to justice.”
