A female police officer and an unidentified male pedestrian were killed on Wednesday after a DAF truck lost control and ploughed into motorcycles, pedestrians, and shops along the New Mile 3 axis of the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway in Gombe State.

The accident, which occurred at about 11:30am, was confirmed in separate statements by the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Investigators attributed the crash to a combination of brake failure and route violation.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer in Gombe State, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the truck driver attempted to enter a filling station through a one-way access when the vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure, leading to a loss of control.

The vehicle subsequently rammed into motorcycles, pedestrians, and nearby shops, causing multiple casualties and extensive damage.

“As a result of the accident, two persons, namely Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina attached to Communications department, Gombe State Command, and one unidentified male pedestrian, regrettably lost their lives, while two other persons, including the truck driver, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment,” the police statement said.

Three motorcycles and several shops were also destroyed in the impact.

The Gombe State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Chuso, warned motorists to avoid traffic violations and ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable road crashes.

“The Commissioner of Police warns motorists against all forms of traffic violations and urges drivers to ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations and proper maintenance of their vehicles,” the statement added.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Gombe State, Samson Kaura, also confirmed the incident, blaming the crash on the truck driver’s decision to take a wrong route after refuelling at a filling station.

“It was caused by a trailer who took fuel at Rano filling station. Instead of taking the right route, he did route violation. He lost control,” Kaura said, adding that the victims included “one male and one female.”

He urged motorists to obey traffic rules and plan their journeys carefully to avoid similar tragedies.

The incident adds to a series of recent fatal road crashes reported across the country, including another accident in Akure, Ondo State, where two persons were also killed in a collision involving a truck, a car, and a motorcycle.
