FINAL RITES: LAGOS LAUNCHES COMMITTEE FOR LATE AKRAN OF BADAGRY

The Lagos State Government has officially inaugurated a planning committee to oversee the celebration of the life and legacy of the late Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

The announcement was made in a statement on Tuesday via the state government’s official social media platforms.

The inauguration, conducted on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was led by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, at the Akran’s Palace in Jegba, Badagry.

The statement noted that Governor Sanwo-Olu urged the committee members to carry out their duties with “unity, clarity of purpose, and a strong determination to deliver a unique, befitting, and memorable celebration in honour of the revered monarch.”

Salu-Hundeyin, the committee chair, thanked the governor for the confidence placed in its members.

She highlighted Badagry’s significance in the state’s affairs and called for full cooperation to ensure a historic and successful celebration.

“She also emphasized that every committee member plays a vital role, reflecting the inclusivity principle of the THEMES Plus Development Agenda.”

“She stated that the committee’s resolutions and outcomes will be officially recorded in the State Gazette, with all deliberations submitted to the Governor for ratification,” the statement partly read.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Princess Adetola Akran-Oketunde expressed gratitude to the governor for his continued support, describing it as a fitting tribute to the late monarch’s legacy.

The inauguration and first meeting of the committee were attended by local government chairmen, traditional and religious leaders, and Hon. Solomon Bonu, the Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Badagry Constituency I.

The Media reported that the Akran of Badagry, Wheno Menu-Toyi, passed away in January 2026 at the age of 89. Having ruled for 48 years, he was a prominent figure in the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. Governor Sanwo-Olu described his death as a significant loss to Badagry, Lagos, and Nigeria, noting his contributions to cultural preservation, unity, and the development of the historic town.
