Chidera Eggerue, also known as Slumflower and a contestant on the first season of MultiChoice’s dating reality show Heartbeat, described her participation as the “experience of a lifetime.”

Speaking about her time on the show, Eggerue expressed gratitude to the organisers for creating the platform, emphasizing that her decision to join was driven more by curiosity and social experimentation than by a desperate search for love.

In an interview with Sunday Scoop, she explained, “For me, it’s less about the desperation to find love and more about placing myself in an unexpected environment, like a dating show. I wanted to take part in this social experiment and test my theories in real life.”

Looking back on her experience in the house, Eggerue said the show surpassed her expectations, particularly because she initially thought she might not form a connection with anyone.

“The summary of my experience on Heartbeat is that it has been the experience of a lifetime. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go on a reality show, especially a dating show, because it’s unpredictable and you never know what is coming next.

“I went into the experience expecting that I wouldn’t connect with any guy and that I would probably remain single while just providing entertainment. But it turned out that I met someone and we connected really well, to the point where we were one of the most stable couples in the Love Pad.”

Eggerue said she remains grateful to the show and its organisers, including MultiChoice, for creating a platform that changed her perspective.

She also addressed claims by some viewers that the show was scripted, insisting that the reactions and emotions displayed by contestants were genuine.

Addressing the common perception that dating show participants are desperate for love, Eggerue said her experience was quite the opposite.

“I get why people might see going on a dating show as desperate. But for me, it wasn’t about desperation. I was there to have fun, explore possibilities, and see what could happen. Honestly, I thought it would be hilarious if someone like me appeared on a dating show,” she explained.

She further shared that her connection with fellow contestant Kena reinforced her belief that meaningful communication and genuine connection are essential in building relationships.

“Going in, I assumed I wouldn’t connect with anyone, yet I ended up forming one of the most stable connections in the house. It shows that when you value yourself and don’t settle for inconsistencies, you’re more likely to meet someone who’s truly on your wavelength,” she said.

Eggerue added that, despite coming from different backgrounds, she has maintained friendly relationships with other housemates since the show ended.

Her bond with Kena, she noted, remains strong even when they are in different countries. “I’m grateful that Kena and I have personalities that let us stay on good terms. Our friendship in the Love Pad laid the foundation, and that will always be the reference point for why we connected in the first place,” she concluded.
