The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, has launched a nationwide Special Tracking Exercise aimed at promoting transparency and ensuring value for money in public infrastructure projects.
The development was disclosed by the ICPC spokesperson, Akor Odey, in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
According to him, the initiative targets the physical verification and performance audit of 760 federal road projects with a combined contract value exceeding N36 trillion.
The exercise, which began on November 14, involves joint teams comprising ICPC investigators, engineers from the Federal Ministry of Works, and independent professionals from bodies such as the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS).
“These teams have now been deployed across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to carry out on-site project assessments,” he said.
Odey explained that the large-scale initiative is designed to achieve several key national objectives, including strengthening fiscal governance to ensure sustainable and cost-effective infrastructure development, as well as the prudent use of public funds.
He added that the exercise is also aimed at reinforcing procurement integrity by investigating and deterring fraudulent practices in the award of government contracts.
According to him, other objectives include enforcing contractor accountability through strict project monitoring, compelling the completion of abandoned projects, and ensuring full compliance with contractual specifications.
Another major goal, Odey said, is financial recovery, targeted at reclaiming public funds from projects found to be grossly inflated or where contractors have clearly failed to deliver.
“The ongoing fieldwork involves a detailed review of project sites, records, and deliverables. At the end of this phase, state-level reports will be consolidated into a comprehensive national audit report,” he stated.
He added that the findings will reveal compliance levels, identify irregularities, and form the basis for decisive enforcement actions by relevant authorities against any implicated individuals or organisations.
Odey described the exercise as a proactive, system-driven effort to safeguard Nigeria’s infrastructure investments.
He further noted that the tracking of 760 projects of this scale reflects ICPC’s resolve to collaborate with government institutions to block leakages, promote accountability, and ensure that public projects deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to collaborative governance aimed at strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s public procurement and project execution framework.
