The Iranian women’s national football team arrived at Istanbul Airport on Tuesday after several members of the delegation withdrew their asylum applications in Australia and opted to return home.
Footage from Turkish news agency DHA showed the players, dressed in Iranian national team tracksuits, walking through the arrivals hall at Istanbul Airport.
The team traveled to Turkey via Oman and Kuala Lumpur, departing from Australia, where they had been competing in the Women’s Asian Cup.
“I am missing my family,” one player told AFP on Monday at Kuala Lumpur Airport. DHA reported that the players left Istanbul Airport under police escort and were taken to a hotel in the city.
They are scheduled to return to Iran on Wednesday, according to DHA.
The asylum requests by seven members of the delegation followed controversy in Australia, where the players were labeled “traitors” for refusing to sing the national anthem during their opening Women’s Asian Cup match.
