The Kwara State Government has warned transport unions, individuals and other groups involved in unauthorised haulage fee collection or the erection of illegal roadblocks across the state that they will face sanctions as it rolls out a digital haulage fee payment system.
The initiative, introduced through the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS), forms part of the state’s ongoing tax reforms aimed at improving revenue generation, eliminating multiple taxation and enhancing the ease of doing business.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, KW-IRS Executive Chairman, Shade Omoniyi, announced that the digital platform is now operational for haulage operators and transporters across the state.
She explained that the new system replaces roadside fee collection and is designed to improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in revenue administration.
According to Omoniyi, the reform aligns with the government’s drive to modernise tax collection processes and abolish illegal revenue collection points.
Under the new arrangement, haulage operators will no longer make payments to individuals stationed along highways, as all fees will now be paid electronically through the digital platform.
To ensure a smooth transition, the agency has re-engaged consultants to oversee the registration of operators, issue official haulage tags and manage the digital payment system.
Omoniyi stated that registration is compulsory for all haulage operators, noting that the haulage tag will serve as their official means of identification.
She further stressed that no unauthorised official, transport union or association is permitted to set up roadblocks or collect haulage fees anywhere in Kwara State.
The KW-IRS boss warned that anyone found engaging in illegal fee collection, erecting unauthorised checkpoints or obstructing haulage operations would be sanctioned in line with the law.
She urged transporters and taxpayers to comply with the new system and advised those seeking further information to visit any KW-IRS office or contact the agency’s authorised consultants.
