The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Kwara State has arrested three men for alleged involvement in illegal mining and the unlawful transportation of suspected solid minerals in Ilorin.

The suspects — Musa Abdullahi, Aliyu Ibrahim, and Ishaq Ibrahim — were apprehended during a late-night intelligence-driven operation by operatives of the Mines and Steel Unit attached to the command’s Special Patrol Team.

Speaking to journalists at the NSCDC headquarters in Ilorin on Tuesday, the state Commandant, Abbas Mohammed, said the suspects, all natives of Keffi in Nasarawa State, were arrested on May 22 along the Jebba Expressway in the Okolowo area of Ilorin.

According to him, officers intercepted a truck with registration number DKA 990 XJ, loaded with about 36 tonnes of substances suspected to be lithium ore.

Mohammed said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects could not present valid mining licences, waybills, or any legal documentation authorising possession and transportation of the minerals.

He described the arrest as a major breakthrough in the command’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, economic sabotage, and the unlawful exploitation of Nigeria’s solid mineral resources.

The commandant disclosed that investigations are ongoing to trace the source and ownership of the suspected minerals, identify other individuals linked to the operation, and establish the company behind the transaction.

He added that the suspects would be prosecuted in line with the law upon the conclusion of investigations.

Mohammed reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting critical national assets and sustaining operations against illegal mining and related crimes across the state.
