Nigeria’s maritime sector has recorded a major breakthrough following the decision by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) to lift the Condition of Entry imposed on vessels arriving in the United States from Nigeria since June 2014.
The development followed sustained efforts by the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and other stakeholders to strengthen maritime security and ensure compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code.
The removal of the 12-year restriction is expected to boost the competitiveness of Nigerian ports, improve vessel turnaround time and schedule reliability, and reduce additional security-related costs associated with vessels calling at Nigerian ports.
The development is also expected to enhance Nigeria’s standing in the global shipping industry and attract greater confidence in the country’s maritime sector.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, commended the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, and other stakeholders for their efforts in achieving the milestone.
Oyetola said the development underscored the government’s commitment to building a safer, more secure and globally competitive maritime industry.
The lifting of the Condition of Entry marks a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s integration into the global maritime and shipping network.
