The Oyo State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to relatives and next of kin of unclaimed corpses deposited in public hospital mortuaries across the state to come forward for identification and collection, warning that unclaimed bodies will thereafter be given a mass burial.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan, the state capital, by the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi.
According to the government, there has been a significant rise in the number of unclaimed corpses stored in mortuaries within public health facilities, leading to severe congestion and overstretching of available storage capacity.
Ajetunmobi explained that the bodies were deposited by various agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Correctional Service and other relevant authorities, but had remained unclaimed over time.
“The corpses were brought to the facilities by the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigerian Correctional Service, and other relevant agencies. Over time, the bodies have remained unclaimed, resulting in severe congestion in the affected mortuaries,” the statement said.
She urged members of the public, especially those with missing relatives, to visit designated public hospital mortuaries to identify and claim bodies within the stipulated timeframe.
The commissioner added that arrangements were being concluded for a mass burial exercise for all unclaimed corpses, which will be conducted after the expiration of the seven-day notice.
She said the move was necessary to ensure the smooth operation of health facilities and maintain acceptable public health standards across the state.
The government reiterated its commitment to effective healthcare management and urged affected families to take advantage of the window period before the commencement of the burial exercise.
