Fuel consumption of premium motor spirit (PMS) in Nigeria surged to 63.7 million liters per day in December 2025, up from 52.9 million liters per day in November, according to the latest fact sheet from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The data revealed a sharp month-on-month increase of 10.8 million liters per day, representing a 20.4% rise in consumption. Out of the 74.2 million liters per day total domestic petrol supply in December, 63.7 million liters were consumed locally, up from 71.5 million liters per day the previous month.

The report also highlighted that fuel supply from Dangote Refinery to the domestic market jumped to 32.01 million liters per day in December, rising from 19.47 million liters per day in November—a 64.4% month-on-month increase. Despite the increase, the refinery fell short of its planned domestic supply target of 50 million liters per day.

Notably, on December 11, 2025, Dangote Refinery lowered its petrol price to N699 per liter and later adjusted the retail price to N739 per liter at MRS filling stations nationwide. The refinery’s Managing Director, David Bird, maintained that the N739 price is competitive.

However, petroleum economics expert Professor Emeritus Wumi Iledare criticized the price, describing it as a market distortion.
