SUSPENDED OSUN CHIEF REMANDED FOR CYBERBULLYING, DEFAMATION, AND THREAT TO HARM

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ede, Osun State, on Monday ordered the remand of the suspended Loogun of Edeland, Jimoh Abdulkabir, over allegations of cyberbullying, defamation, and threats to harm a community member, Alhaji Adams Akindere.
The embattled traditional titleholder, 45, who was suspended indefinitely by the Timi of Ede, Oba Munirudeen Lawal, on April 21 for insubordination and alleged land grabbing, was arraigned on a four-count charge. The suit, numbered M/ED/1064/C/2025, includes conspiracy to commit defamation, threats of violence, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
According to court documents, Abdulkabir and others now at large allegedly circulated defamatory statements via WhatsApp, falsely accusing Akindere of unlawfully selling about 200 acres of land without the knowledge or consent of the Loogun or his family. The content of the posts reportedly damaged Akindere’s reputation and incited unrest within the community.
The charge sheet also alleges that the defendant unlawfully threatened to harm Akindere, thereby violating provisions of the Criminal Code in a manner deemed capable of inciting violence and disrupting public peace.
During proceedings, Police Prosecutor Sunday Adepoju told the court that the prosecution had sufficient evidence and requested an accelerated hearing of the matter. He emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the potential consequences of the defendant’s actions.
Defence counsel, Taofeek Oyesiji, who made an oral application for bail, argued that the offences were bailable and noted that the defendant had been receiving medical attention due to ill health while in detention at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo.
Presiding Magistrate V.A. Adedokun, however, declined the bail application and ordered that the defendant be remanded in a custodial facility. The case was adjourned till June 19, 2025, for further hearing.
The courtroom proceedings mark another chapter in a string of controversies surrounding the suspended Loogun, whose conduct has stirred tension in Ede’s traditional and civic circles.
