VISA-FREE TRAVEL AGREED BETWEEN NIGERIA AND ANGOLA FOR DIPLOMATS

Nigeria and Angola have formalized a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and official/service passports, aimed at boosting bilateral relations and facilitating official travel between the two nations.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the agreement was signed on Saturday during the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa.
The Nigerian delegation was led by Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, while Angola was represented by its Minister of International Relations, Ambassador Tete Antonio.
At the signing, Tuggar described the agreement as a long-awaited milestone that will deepen cooperation and ease official exchanges between the two countries.
“This initiative has been long overdue and represents a timely step in strengthening bilateral engagement,” he said. He explained that the visa exemption will allow diplomatic and official/service passport holders to move more freely, improving institutional coordination and facilitating smoother official interactions.

Tuggar added that the arrangement will enhance cooperation, promote joint initiatives, and create broader opportunities for dialogue and partnership. He also highlighted the historical ties between Nigeria and Angola, recalling Nigeria’s support during Angola’s struggle for independence and referencing former Head of State General Murtala Muhammed’s landmark speech, Africa Has Come of Age, as a symbol of solidarity.
In response, Angola’s Foreign Minister, Tete Antonio, expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s principled support during Africa’s anti-colonial struggles, noting that the shared history laid the foundation for the strong diplomatic relationship enjoyed today.
Antonio described the agreement as a forward-looking step that consolidates diplomatic ties and opens avenues for closer collaboration, adding that it transforms historical goodwill into practical, sustained partnerships.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the visa exemption is more than a procedural measure; it reaffirms mutual trust, shared values, and a commitment to modernizing diplomatic engagement, removing administrative barriers, and strengthening cooperation between relevant institutions in Nigeria and Angola.
