Sixteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha etched his name into Liverpool’s history books on Monday night after scoring a sensational stoppage-time winner in a thrilling 3-2 Premier League victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Ngumoha, who came off the bench, struck in the 100th minute after being set up by Mohamed Salah, calmly slotting past goalkeeper Nick Pope to become the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history.
Ryan Gravenberch had put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute with a thunderous long-range effort, before Hugo Ekitike doubled the advantage seconds after the restart.
Despite being reduced to 10 men when Anthony Gordon was sent off following a VAR review of his reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk just before halftime, Newcastle mounted a spirited comeback. Bruno Guimarães powered home a header in the 57th minute before substitute William Osula equalised in the 88th minute, sparking hopes of a dramatic turnaround.
However, Ngumoha’s late strike denied Eddie Howe’s side a share of the spoils, leaving the Magpies to regret Gordon’s dismissal and missed chances.
The victory sees Arne Slot’s Liverpool maintain their strong start to the campaign, while Newcastle are left to regroup after a heartbreaking finish.
