The Imo State Government has dismantled several criminal hideouts within the Naze Industrial Cluster in a coordinated security operation aimed at tackling rising criminal activities in the area.
The exercise, carried out by the Office of the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance led by Nze Chinasa Nwaneri in collaboration with security agencies, followed intelligence reports indicating that the industrial hub had become a haven for criminal gangs.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic and Creative Media, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu, arms and sharp objects were recovered during the raid.
“Several suspects were apprehended and immediately handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation and prosecution,” the statement confirmed.
The structures reportedly served as bases for coordinating criminal acts such as robbery, drug-related offences, and attacks on nearby communities and businesses.
Residents and business owners reportedly welcomed the move, describing it as a step toward restoring safety and enabling legitimate commercial activities to flourish without fear.
The state government reiterated its commitment to eliminating criminal enclaves across Owerri and other parts of Imo State, with an emphasis on preventing their re-emergence and safeguarding all industrial and public zones.
In July 2025, a similar operation in which a notorious criminal hideout at Ama Hausa on Douglas Road, Owerri, was demolished. Suspects involved in gunrunning and drug peddling were arrested after failing to provide satisfactory explanations for their presence on the property.
