ADC GUBER ASPIRANT SEEKS ANNULMENT OF JIGAWA PRIMARY OVER ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES

A governorship aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Jigawa State, Hon. Bashir Adamu, popularly known as Matawallen Kazaure, has petitioned the party’s State Election Appeal Committee, calling for the cancellation of the recently conducted governorship primary election.

In the petition, which was personally signed by the aspirant, Adamu alleged that the exercise was fraught with irregularities, violations of party guidelines and undue interference by party officials.

He accused the chairman of the primary election committee of compromising his neutrality by allegedly acting under the influence of the State Executive Committee, contrary to the party’s rules. According to him, the chairman eventually announced the party’s candidate under pressure.

The former lawmaker further claimed that the State Executive Committee was biased and actively worked to ensure the emergence of another aspirant, Sabo Nagudu, as the ADC governorship candidate.

Adamu argued that despite his contributions to building the party’s structure across Jigawa State’s 27 local government areas, some party officials allegedly mobilised support for his opponent and were entrusted with sensitive election materials, creating opportunities for manipulation.

He also alleged that officials responsible for distributing election materials deliberately delayed their delivery, particularly in the North-West Senatorial District, causing significant disruptions to the voting process.

According to him, the late arrival of materials forced many party members who had waited for accreditation to leave before voting commenced.

The aspirant further alleged that supporters of his rival exploited the situation by taking possession of election materials and producing results in favour of their preferred candidate.

He also cited cases of violence, intimidation and thuggery in parts of the state, which he said affected the credibility of the exercise. Adamu noted that the electoral committee chairman reportedly cancelled voting in four local government areas due to security concerns and disruptions.

He maintained that the disturbances rendered the primary inconclusive and questioned the legitimacy of the results announced by the State Executive Committee, insisting that only the duly constituted Primary Election Committee had the authority to declare the outcome.

Consequently, Adamu urged the Appeal Committee to nullify the election and conduct a fresh primary, arguing that the process breached ADC guidelines and provisions of the Electoral Act.

Despite raising concerns over the exercise, the aspirant reaffirmed his commitment to the ADC and expressed confidence that the party would objectively review the issues highlighted in his petition.
