Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned until June 15, 2026, for ruling on an application filed by the presidential candidate of the Action Alliance Congress, Omoyele Sowore, seeking the judge’s recusal from his ongoing trial.

At the resumed hearing, Sowore informed the court that he would be representing himself for the time being, pending the reconstitution of his legal team or the engagement of new counsel.

He told the court that his lawyers were unwilling to continue with the case, alleging that they feared humiliation in court.

Sowore thereafter moved two applications he had previously filed and served on the prosecution. In one application, he sought an order compelling the judge to recuse himself on grounds of alleged bias, while the second requested that the case be referred to the Chief Judge for reassignment to another judge.

However, the prosecuting counsel, Kehinde Akinlolu, opposed the applications, describing them as an abuse of court process and an attempt to distract the court. He urged the court to dismiss the applications outright.

In a brief ruling, Justice Umar stated that he would consider the processes filed before delivering his decision and subsequently adjourned the matter.

Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over alleged defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu, in which he reportedly described the president as “a criminal” on social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.
