The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in Kuje Correctional Centre pending further proceedings in his ongoing defamation case.

Delivering a brief ruling, Justice Mohammed Garba Umar directed that Sowore remain in custody while the court considers and determines his application seeking a stay of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued for his arrest.

The court also rejected an earlier application by Sowore requesting that Justice Umar withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.

Following the ruling, the judge adjourned the matter until June 24 for the hearing of the stay application filed by Sowore’s new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

Sowore arrived at the court premises accompanied by supporters carrying placards in solidarity with him.

The court had on June 16 revoked the bail previously granted to the AAC chieftain after he failed to appear for trial. In the same ruling, Justice Umar granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), and issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made defamatory statements against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts shared on his X and Facebook accounts.
