The South-West chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, over his claim that the recent bandit attack in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State may have been orchestrated by Governor Seyi Makinde to discredit President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Friday, the party described Fayose’s remarks as reckless, insensitive and politically motivated, arguing that they trivialise a serious security challenge facing the country.

Signed by the South-West PDP Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, the statement accused Fayose of attempting to turn a national security concern into a political issue at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with insecurity, abductions and displacement.

Fayose had alleged during a television interview that the recent kidnapping of pupils and teachers in parts of Oyo State was deliberately orchestrated by the state government to embarrass the President. He questioned the government’s handling of the incident and suggested political motives behind its response.

Reacting, the PDP urged Nigerians to reject efforts to politicise insecurity, stressing that such challenges require responsible leadership, cooperation and unity rather than inflammatory accusations. The party also expressed support for Governor Makinde, commending his commitment to the safety and welfare of Oyo residents.

The PDP further accused Fayose of selective criticism, pointing to his silence over the abduction of worshippers in Eda-Oniyo, Ekiti State, where several victims reportedly remain in captivity following an attack by gunmen.

According to the party, Fayose failed to hold the Ekiti State Government accountable for the incident despite its proximity to his hometown, while continuing to publicly support Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration and re-election efforts.

The statement also questioned Fayose’s loyalty to the PDP, noting his open endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government in Ekiti and the participation of his son in politics under the APC platform.

The South-West PDP argued that Fayose’s actions contradict his claim of being a leader of the party in Ekiti State and undermine the principles of party loyalty and political consistency.

The party urged respected PDP elder and former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, to intervene and encourage Fayose to refrain from actions it believes are damaging to the party’s unity and interests.
