The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has announced the conviction of four individuals for illegal tree felling in Sharada Municipal, Kano State.

In a statement released on Monday, the ministry identified one of the convicts as Jibril Adamu, alongside three others, who were prosecuted under the Kano State Forestry Law, which prohibits unauthorised cutting of trees.

The case, prosecuted by Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu, was heard at Court 2, Normansland, before His Worship Auwalu Yusuf. After reviewing the evidence, the court sentenced the four defendants to three months imprisonment each, with an option of a N40,000 fine. They were also ordered to pay N50,000 compensation for the environmental damage caused.

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, described the ruling as a landmark judgment that underscores the government’s commitment to protecting the environment.

“Every tree cut down illegally robs our city of clean air, shade, and climate resilience. This ruling sends a strong message that Kano will not tolerate environmental vandalism,” Hashim stated.

The ministry further urged residents to report illegal logging and other environmental offences through its official website.
