Lagos State University (LASU) has dismissed claims of admission racketeering making the rounds on social media, stressing that its 2025/2026 admission exercise remains strictly merit-driven and transparent.
In a statement signed by Deputy Registrar/Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi A., the University said it had monitored with concern the misleading narratives online, especially allegations that admission slots were being “sold” by staff members.

LASU emphasized that “the power to admit students rests solely with the Vice-Chancellor” and reiterated that no staff member has the authority to offer admission in exchange for money. It described such claims as attempts by fraudulent individuals to exploit desperate candidates.
The institution clarified that its admission process is guided by the Lagos State University Law 2004 (as amended), which mandates a merit-based system with a 70:30 ratio in favour of Lagos indigenes. Accordingly, admission has been offered to candidates with the highest scores across courses as well as all qualified, verified Lagos State indigenes.
The statement further highlighted that LASU was the most subscribed university in the 2025 JAMB UTME, attracting over 70,000 applicants. With fewer than 20 percent able to secure admission, the University noted that frustration among unsuccessful candidates was understandable but insisted that it could not be pressured into exceeding its approved quota.
On allegations of racketeering, LASU urged members of the public with verifiable evidence to report such cases via complaints.admissions@lasu.edu.ng for thorough investigation, warning that anyone found culpable would face strict disciplinary action.
“We sympathise sincerely with candidates who, despite strong results, could not be admitted, but LASU cannot be coerced or blackmailed into exceeding its approved capacity,” the statement read.
The University described the high demand for admission as evidence of its rising profile, noting: “We are, indeed, victims of our own success. But success also demands responsibility, on the part of the University to uphold transparency and merit, and on the part of applicants and the public to resist the temptation of misinformation.”
LASU reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, transparency, and merit in every admission decision, stressing that while disappointment may be temporary, truth and integrity will continue to define its processes.
