The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Zamfara State has raised concerns over the alleged planting of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by suspected bandits along the Gurusu-Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum Local Government Area.
The party described the reported development as a serious escalation of insecurity, warning that the use of explosives on public roads could put the lives of residents and commuters at significant risk.
In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Alkasimu Mustapha Kayatawa, the NDC urged the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently secure the affected route and other vulnerable areas across the state.
Kayatawa said the reported incident had increased the dangers faced by motorists, farmers, traders, commuters and security personnel who depend on the road.
The party described the alleged deployment of IEDs on public roads as a dangerous development that must be prevented from becoming a recurring tactic among criminal groups in Zamfara.
It called for a comprehensive review of security operations in Bukkuyum and other vulnerable communities, while urging authorities to intensify patrols and improve intelligence gathering.
The NDC also advocated enhanced capacity for detecting and neutralising explosive devices, alongside increased security presence on major highways, rural roads and in communities.
According to the party, intelligence-driven operations would be essential to identifying criminal networks and disrupting planned attacks before they occur.
“We need stronger intelligence gathering, sustained patrols and increased security presence along the roads and communities where residents remain exposed,” Kayatawa said.
The party also questioned the disparity in security deployment between Zamfara and the extensive security presence witnessed during the recent Osun governorship election.
It argued that the same level of urgency should be applied to protecting citizens in areas facing persistent banditry and other forms of violent crime.
The NDC specifically called for the reinforcement of security operations along the Gurusu-Gwashi corridor to prevent criminal groups from establishing explosive devices as a routine method of attacking civilians.
It further urged the Zamfara State Government to strengthen collaboration with federal security agencies and improve community-based intelligence networks.
The party noted that residents, traditional rulers and community leaders could assist security agencies by providing timely information on suspicious movements and activities.
The NDC expressed concern over the wider consequences of banditry in Zamfara, including loss of lives, ransom payments and the displacement of communities.
“Zamfara has buried too many innocent citizens. Too many families have paid ransoms. Too many communities have been displaced,” the party said.
It added, “Our roads must not now become minefields.”
The NDC urged the Federal Government, security agencies and the state government to treat the reported IED incident as an urgent security warning and take decisive steps to protect residents and road users.
It also called for sustained security operations rather than temporary deployments, stressing that lasting peace would require continuous intelligence-led operations and stronger cooperation between security agencies and local communities.
