The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a public alert over the circulation of counterfeit N1000 notes in Kwara State, warning residents and business operators to exercise caution.

In a statement released in Ilorin, the State Director of NOA, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Dare, confirmed that intelligence reports have uncovered the activities of criminal syndicates distributing fake currency across the state.

“These counterfeit notes, bearing batch numbers 364232 and 898248, are being used to defraud unsuspecting traders, POS operators, and residents during peak business hours, especially in local markets,” Dare revealed.

He noted that the fake notes can be identified by certain tell-tale signs, including blurred portraits, distorted watermarks, and irregular security features.

Dare described the crime as unpatriotic and damaging to Nigeria’s economy, urging the public to remain vigilant, especially when handling large cash transactions.

“The NOA Kwara Directorate is actively working to sensitise residents about the risks associated with counterfeit currency and the need to verify the authenticity of notes,” he stated.

He further assured that the agency is collaborating with security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the criminal operation.

“We encourage the public to report any suspicious transactions or individuals to law enforcement agencies. Together, we can safeguard our financial system and ensure a more secure commercial environment,” he added.

The NOA reiterated its commitment to public enlightenment and urged citizens to take an active role in curbing the spread of fake currency in the state.
