The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has acknowledged media reports of the alleged assault of a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Mikail Abdussalam, at the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Lagos.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, when Abdussalam drove his sister to the train station in Moniya, Ibadan, to assist her in boarding a train to Lagos.

The situation reportedly escalated after a confrontation with some NRC staff members, who allegedly assaulted the lecturer, inflicted injuries on him, and threatened his life.

Reacting to the development, Opeifa said the corporation viewed the incident with serious concern and emphasised that harassment, intimidation, or any form of misconduct toward passengers or members of the public was unacceptable.

“This is not in line with the values and operational standards of the Nigerian Railway Corporation. Management has therefore ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

He added that any personnel found to have acted contrary to the corporation’s professional and public service code of conduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with existing regulations and laws.

Opeifa also expressed regret over the incident and apologised to the lecturer for the distress caused.

“The Nigerian Railway Corporation sincerely regrets the unfortunate incident and extends its apologies to the lecturer for the distress caused.

“The corporation remains committed to ensuring that all passengers and visitors at its stations are treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism at all times,” he said.

He further assured the public that necessary steps were being taken to strengthen adherence to customer service standards across NRC facilities to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
