One person has been confirmed dead while another sustained serious injuries in separate incidents involving a truck accident and a building collapse in different parts of Lagos State.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olawale Afolabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday.
According to the agency, a fatality was recorded in a partial building collapse at Lekki Phase 1, while three persons were rescued after a truck rammed into a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) along Old Abeokuta Road inward Abattoir on Thursday night.
In the truck accident, which occurred at about 10:40 p.m., an articulated vehicle carrying a 40-foot container reportedly suffered brake failure while descending the Old Abeokuta Road.
The vehicle subsequently lost control and collided head-on with a Toyota Highlander with registration number KRD 179KL.
The driver of the SUV sustained severe fractures to both legs and his left arm but was rescued alive from the wreckage. Two other occupants of the vehicle escaped unhurt, and no fatalities were recorded in the crash.
In a separate incident, a three-storey building under construction partially collapsed at No. 1 Josephine Fingesi Street, off Wole Olateju Street, Lekki Phase 1.
Nine persons were reportedly affected in the collapse. Seven adult males were rescued alive and stabilised by emergency responders, while one person was confirmed dead at the scene. Another individual remains missing as search and rescue operations continue.
LASEMA said emergency responders, including the Lagos State Building Control Agency and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, worked through the night to rescue victims and secure the scene.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said efforts were ongoing to ensure no victim remained trapped under the rubble.
“Our priority remains saving lives. We are working methodically and in partnership with relevant agencies to ensure no victim is left behind while maintaining safety for responders,” he stated.
