ORGANISED LABOUR CALLS FOR N154,000 MINIMUM WAGE AMID GROWING ECONOMIC HARDSHIP

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an increase in the national minimum wage to N154,000, citing rising economic hardship and the declining purchasing power of Nigerian workers.
The demand was outlined in a letter from the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), a subsidiary of the NLC.
Signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga, the letter emphasized the “urgent need for an upward review of salaries and allowances” within the public service.
The council stated that the current wage structure no longer aligns with economic realities, as rising inflation, food prices, and transportation costs continue to strain workers.
It noted that the proposed N154,000 minimum wage is intended to restore a reasonable standard of living and called on the Federal Government to begin immediate negotiations.
The appeal comes amid increasing concerns over Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis, with many households finding it difficult to meet basic needs.
