The Nigeria Police Force in Sokoto State has confirmed that one person was killed and five others abducted during a bandit attack on Mallamawar Yari village in Gawakuke Ward, Rabah Local Government Area.

Meanwhile, in Kwara State, a housewife and her son were reportedly kidnapped during a late-evening raid on Ndeji village in Edu Local Government Area.

The Sokoto attack occurred on Saturday night, when armed men stormed the community, causing widespread panic. Early social media reports suggested the attackers disguised themselves in women’s hijabs, but DSP Ahmed Rufai, spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, dismissed this claim. He confirmed that five people were abducted—three women and two men—and one person was killed, adding that security agencies are actively pursuing the perpetrators.

“Police and other security agencies are working to track down the bandits and rescue the victims,” Rufai said, noting that investigative and security measures in the area have been intensified.

The latest incidents highlight rising security concerns in Sokoto State, where kidnappings and rural attacks have increasingly threatened residents, especially in border local government areas. Authorities have urged communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

In Kwara, eyewitnesses told The media that the mother and son were ambushed while returning from a cooking hut on the village outskirts, where they had gone to prepare an evening meal. Mr. Idris, a resident, said the attackers struck between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm on Saturday.

“Sadly, they were ambushed while heading back home and taken by the gunmen,” Idris recounted, noting that the family had previously been targeted in an earlier attack, during which a N150 million ransom was demanded for the release of a relative and his manager.

In a separate incident, local vigilantes in Patigi Local Government Area foiled a kidnap attempt, rescuing three victims during a late-night raid in Chitta community. A forest guard involved in the operation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said joint efforts with soldiers and vigilantes forced the kidnappers to abandon the victims and flee into the forest.

The Kwara State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, declined to comment when contacted.

These events underscore ongoing security challenges across Sokoto and Kwara states, prompting calls for increased vigilance and coordinated response from law enforcement and local communities.
