The Senator for Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, has declared his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party to join the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The former Governor of Bayelsa State made his announcement on Thursday during a media briefing in Abuja.

He attributed his decision to leave the PDP to what he described as irreconcilable differences within the former ruling party.

The lawmaker, however, stated that the NDC, recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would serve as the opposition party the country needs. He encouraged Nigerians to support and register with the new party for the sake of a better Nigeria.

“Last week, INEC issued a certificate of registration, and we now have Nigeria’s newest party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with the victory sign as our symbol. My fellow Nigerians, you now have a credible alternative opposition party in the Nigeria Democratic Congress,” he said.

“Yes, it is happening now. We would have preferred it to begin months or even years ago, but we don’t control INEC or their processes, and the judiciary is also beyond our control. Nevertheless, thank God it has finally come,” Dickson said.

The senator, reflecting on his long-standing involvement in opposition politics, recounted his early political career in various opposition parties, emphasizing that Nigeria cannot function as a one-party state.

“This nation cannot be a one-party state. Nigeria is not designed to be a one-party state. We are a diverse country culturally, religiously, and politically, and that diversity is what makes our nation strong.

“Therefore, anyone or any party advocating for one-party rule is mistaken. We build political parties and engage in movements to gain power for the benefit of the people, not for personal gain,” he stated.

Last month, INEC announced the registration of two new political parties—the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC)—raising the total number of registered political parties in Nigeria to 21.
