Renowned South African rapper Nasty C has credited Nigerian music star Wizkid with helping to elevate African music on the global stage.
Speaking during a podcast interview, the Zulu Man With Some Power hitmaker said Wizkid’s 2016 collaboration with Canadian superstar Drake on One Dance played a major role in opening international doors for contemporary African artists.
According to him, the success of the song gave Afrobeats massive global exposure and transformed the genre into a highly profitable space, prompting some rappers to transition from hip-hop to Afrobeats.
He explained that the collaboration significantly boosted the visibility of African music, adding that during interviews in Nigeria and Ghana, he was told that several rappers switched to Afrobeats because of the commercial opportunities that followed the song’s success.
Daily Post reports that One Dance, which also featured British singer Kyla, made history by becoming the first song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify, earning recognition from Guinness World Records.
Blending Afrobeats, dancehall, and pop influences, the track is widely regarded as one of the songs that helped bring Afrobeats into mainstream global consciousness.
Drake has also acknowledged Wizkid’s significant contribution to the song, with the Nigerian singer officially credited as a co-writer, co-producer, and featured performer.
