Government College, Ibadan, has announced the temporary closure of the school with immediate effect following rising security concerns in the area.

The decision, which took effect on Friday, June 5, 2026, was approved by the School Governing Board after consultations with security advisers, according to a notice issued to parents and guardians by the school principal, Mr. Olugbemi Oresegun.

The school explained that the move became necessary due to growing security apprehension recorded over the past few days, stressing that the safety and wellbeing of students and staff remain its top priority.

According to the notice, normal academic activities can no longer continue under the prevailing circumstances, prompting the management to suspend operations until further notice.

Parents and guardians of boarding students have been directed to make immediate arrangements to pick up their children, while boarding staff remain on standby to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation process. Parents were advised to contact the Senior House Master for necessary arrangements.

The management also instructed parents of day students not to send their wards to school pending further communication.

To minimise disruption to learning, the school disclosed that contingency measures, including take-home assignments and possible virtual classes, are being developed. Updates on academic arrangements will be communicated through class WhatsApp groups and SMS channels.

Government College, Ibadan, stated that it remains in close contact with relevant security agencies and will continue to monitor developments before announcing a date for resumption.

The school expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and appealed for the understanding, prayers and cooperation of parents during the period.
