Nollywood actor IK Ogbonna has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late friend and colleague, Alex Ekubo, more than two months after his passing, revealing that he still instinctively tries to call him.

In an emotional Instagram post shared on Tuesday, Ogbonna described Ekubo’s death as a devastating loss that has profoundly altered his understanding of life, grief and faith.

“On May 11, I lost my best friend and brother, Alexx. Nothing prepares you for a loss like that,” he wrote.

Ekubo died on May 12, 2026, after spending several hours on life support. According to his family, he passed away at Evercare Hospital in Lagos following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Ogbonna said the true weight of death is only understood when it affects someone deeply close.

The actor disclosed that the past two months had been marked by attempts to make sense of life, loss and God’s purpose, while grappling with the sudden absence of someone he considered a brother.

He recalled the dreams they shared, including plans to build businesses, create movies, travel the world and raise their families together.

Ogbonna said neither of them ever imagined that one would leave before the other, adding that he has found comfort in trusting God despite lingering questions.

According to him, faith has helped him accept that not every painful experience comes with immediate answers.

He described Ekubo as a man who genuinely touched lives through his kindness, generosity, laughter and unwavering support for others.

The actor noted that his greatest consolation is knowing that Ekubo lived a meaningful life defined by impact rather than material success.

Ogbonna also spoke candidly about the daily reality of grief, saying there are still moments when he picks up his phone intending to call his late friend or share a funny story, only to be reminded of his absence.

He urged people to value their relationships, forgive easily and show appreciation to loved ones while they still can.

Concluding the tribute, Ogbonna thanked Ekubo for years of friendship, support and brotherhood, promising to honour his memory by continuing to pursue purpose and make a positive impact.

“You may no longer walk beside me, but you will always walk within me,” he wrote, adding, “Until we meet again, my brother. Rest well. I love you, always.”
