The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a suspected cult member, Agboola Olamilekan, and recovered a locally fabricated pistol during a joint security operation in Ilorin, the state capital.

The arrest was made during an intelligence-led operation conducted by police operatives in collaboration with other security agencies and the Kwara State Polytechnic Security Unit as part of efforts to dismantle criminal networks and combat cult-related activities across the state.

According to the command, the suspect was found with the locally made firearm at the time of his arrest, describing the operation as another success in its ongoing campaign against cultism and the spread of illegal weapons.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the operation aligns with the command’s strategy of using proactive and intelligence-driven policing to prevent criminal elements from operating within Kwara State.

She noted that investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the suspected criminal network linked to the suspect.

“The operation forms part of the Command’s sustained efforts to disrupt cult-related activities, curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, and deny criminal elements the opportunity to thrive within Kwara State,” she said.

Ejire-Adeyemi assured residents that the police would continue to intensify efforts to bring those responsible for threatening public peace to justice.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining its crackdown on cultism and other violent crimes.

“Every successful operation represents another step towards dismantling criminal networks and enhancing public safety across the state through proactive and intelligence-led policing,” Adekimi said.

He added that the command remains committed to advancing the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, through intelligence-led policing, strategic partnerships, and sustained operations targeting criminal groups.

The latest arrest comes amid an intensified campaign against cult-related crimes in Ilorin. On June 26, police arrested two suspected cult members, Abdullahi Jimoh Omotoho, 33, and Abdullahi Kareem Kawu, popularly known as “B-Red,” in separate intelligence-led operations, during which another locally fabricated firearm was recovered.
