JUNE 12 SYMBOLISES STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM, SAYS ABIA LABOUR PARTY

By: Balogun Ibrahim
The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has described June 12 as a historic emblem of the collective struggle for freedom, justice, inclusive participation, and the right of citizens to shape their political future through democratic means.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the state chairman, Peter Azubuike, the party noted that while residents of Abia State are currently benefiting from democratic governance under Governor Alex Otti, it is important to emphasize that democracy thrives only when citizens actively engage in the electoral process.
The party joined millions of Nigerians in honouring the sacrifices and resilience of those who fought for the restoration and sustainability of democratic rule in the country.
It therefore called on eligible residents of the state to participate in the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission Continuous Voter Registration exercise by registering and obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
It specifically urged young people who have reached the age of 18 to take advantage of the opportunity to register and play an active role in shaping the future of the state and nation.

The party stressed that the PVC remains a vital democratic tool through which citizens elect leaders, hold governments accountable, and safeguard good governance for present and future generations.
It warned that failure to register would amount to forfeiting one’s democratic voice, insisting that no eligible Abian should be left out of the process.
The Labour Party further encouraged community leaders, religious bodies, youth groups, market associations, artisans, transport unions, and civil society organisations to intensify sensitisation efforts and mobilise participation in the voter registration exercise before it concludes.
As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the party reminded citizens that sustaining democracy goes beyond enjoying its benefits, requiring continuous participation, vigilance, and commitment from all.
It concluded by urging residents to strengthen democratic institutions, protect good governance, and work collectively towards a better future for Abia State through active voter engagement.
