The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has uncovered and shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country.
The move followed a nationwide crackdown on unapproved institutions, according to details of the commission’s recent achievements obtained by our correspondent.
“The NCCE identified and shut down 22 illegal Colleges of Education operating across the country. The Commission also conducted personnel audit and financial monitoring in all the 21 federal colleges of education,” the statement read.
The development comes on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to regulatory bodies to eliminate illegal higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. Speaking at the 14th convocation ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, the President represented by the Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Rakiya Ilyasu described such institutions as “certificate millers” undermining the credibility of the nation’s education system.
Tinubu stressed that the integrity of Nigeria’s academic system must not be compromised, assuring that his administration remains committed to strengthening education regulatory agencies for greater efficiency and quality.
He further noted that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the NCCE are working together to stamp out cases of forgery and unaccredited institutions in the country.
