NIS WARNS NIGERIANS TO USE U.S. VISAS RESPONSIBLY OR FACE SANCTIONS

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerians travelling to the United States, urging strict compliance with the terms and conditions of their U.S. visas.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed that the U.S. government had raised concerns over increasing cases of visa misuse by Nigerian nationals.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians,” Akinlabi stated.
He emphasized that all U.S. visa holders must abide by the purpose declared during their visa applications, noting that American immigration authorities conduct ongoing security checks even after arrival in the country.
“Any breach of immigration or other laws can lead to visa revocation or deportation. Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel,” he warned.
The NIS particularly cautioned Nigerian students in the U.S. to stay enrolled in active academic programmes and avoid unauthorised withdrawals or prolonged absenteeism. Akinlabi noted that such behaviour could result in the immediate cancellation of their student visas and bar them from future entry into the United States.
Additionally, the advisory pointed out that U.S. consular officers reserve the right to deny tourist visas to applicants suspected of seeking to give birth in the U.S. solely for the purpose of obtaining citizenship for their children.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to upholding international travel norms, Akinlabi said the NIS will continue working with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria does not fall under any future expanded visa restrictions.
The Immigration Service urged all travellers to honour the integrity of their visa agreements and respect the host country’s laws to safeguard their future travel opportunities.
