POLICE INTERCEPT MINIBUS, RESCUE THREE CHILDREN FROM SUSPECTED TRAFFICKERS

UYO — Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have thwarted an attempt to abduct three children in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, arresting two suspected child traffickers after a swift intervention by security personnel and vigilant community youths.

The suspects, identified as Emmanuel Johnny of Ikot Etobo village in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area and Ifiok Umoh of Ikot Ikpene in Oruk Anam Local Government Area, were apprehended while allegedly trying to transport the children out of the area.

According to a statement issued in Uyo by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, youths in the Ekparakwa community acted on intelligence and mounted a roadblock along the Ekparakwa-Uyo Road, helping to intercept the suspects and rescue the children.

The police spokesperson said the command received a distress call on June 3, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., reporting that three children had been abducted in Mkpat Enin and were being moved to an undisclosed destination.

Following the report, detectives were immediately deployed, while strategic entry and exit points across the area were secured in a coordinated operation aimed at rescuing the victims and apprehending those responsible.

During the operation, officers intercepted a minibus with registration number 830 PH. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of the three missing children inside.

“The children were rescued unharmed, while two suspects were arrested at the scene,” the statement said.

The police identified the suspects as 39-year-old Emmanuel Johnny, a native of Ikot Itokpo village in Nsit Ubium but resident in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and 28-year-old Ifiok Umoh from Ikot Ikpene village in Oruk Anam.

DSP John confirmed that the rescued children have since been reunited with their families, while the suspects remain in police custody pending further investigation.

She added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended both the operatives and members of the community for their prompt action and vigilance, which contributed significantly to the successful rescue operation.

The commissioner has also ordered a thorough investigation to uncover and apprehend other members of the suspected trafficking network for prosecution.

The command urged residents to remain alert and continue providing credible information to security agencies, assuring the public that all useful information would be treated with strict confidentiality.
