GATEWAY AIRPORT RECEIVES FIRST BATCH OF RETURNING OGUN PILGRIMS

The first batch of 345 pilgrims from Ogun State who participated in the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage has arrived safely in Nigeria after successfully completing the religious exercise in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia.

The returning pilgrims, made up of 151 men and 194 women, landed at the Gateway International Airport in Ilisan-Iperu Remo aboard a Flynas A330 aircraft at 8:41 p.m. on Thursday.

Their arrival marked a notable milestone for the airport, which welcomed a direct international flight from Saudi Arabia carrying pilgrims back home after this year’s Hajj.

Senior government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, and the Head of Service, Mr. Olarenwaju Iskeel Saka, were on hand to receive the pilgrims on behalf of the Ogun State Government.

Addressing the pilgrims during a reception held at the airport, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, represented by the SSG, described the smooth execution of the 2026 Hajj operation as a major success for the state.

He expressed delight over the outcome of the exercise, noting that despite initial doubts about its feasibility, the state had successfully coordinated both the departure and return of the pilgrims.

Governor Abiodun praised the pilgrims for their discipline and exemplary conduct throughout their stay in Saudi Arabia, describing them as worthy representatives of Ogun State.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving Hajj operations and providing enhanced support for future pilgrims.

The governor also encouraged the returnees to reflect the values and lessons gained during the pilgrimage by living lives marked by humility, obedience to the law, and good character.

According to him, the true impact of the pilgrimage should be evident in their daily conduct and interactions with others.

Also speaking, the Governor’s Consultant on Islamic Affairs and leader of the first batch of pilgrims, Sheikh Iskeel Lawal Sugar, commended Governor Abiodun for his dedication to the welfare of the pilgrims, noting that the governor maintained regular contact with them throughout their stay in Mecca.

Some of the returning pilgrims, including Alhaji Ayomide Adetunji and Alhaja Tawa Balogun, expressed gratitude to God for a successful pilgrimage and safe return to Nigeria.

They also appreciated the Ogun State Government for the support and welfare services provided during their stay in Saudi Arabia, describing the Hajj experience as both fulfilling and memorable.

The pilgrims further hailed the convenience of arriving directly at Gateway International Airport, describing the development as historic and applauding the government’s efforts in ensuring a seamless travel experience.
