Videos showing severe flooding along the Nsukka Road in Enugu State after a heavy rainfall on Friday have generated widespread reactions on social media, with residents expressing concerns over the condition of the road and the effectiveness of drainage infrastructure.

One of the viral clips captured several commercial and private vehicles stranded on the flooded roadway, including a state-owned commercial Coaster bus branded with the image of Governor Peter Mbah.

In the video, an onlooker could be heard urging passengers to disembark from the bus and walk, while also criticizing the state of the road and calling on the governor to address the situation.

Another clip showed a commercial motorcyclist dropping off passengers before attempting to navigate the flooded area, forcing commuters to continue their journey on foot along the road median.

Several vehicles were also seen moving cautiously through the waterlogged road, while some motorists appeared to be struggling with vehicles that had broken down due to the flooding.

The videos sparked intense debate on social media platforms, with many users calling for improved drainage maintenance and better flood management measures along the busy route.

While some residents blamed the flooding on poor infrastructure and inadequate maintenance by government authorities, others argued that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels by residents contributed significantly to the problem.

Some social media users maintained that blocked gutters and poor waste disposal habits had prevented proper water flow, leading to the flooding.

Others pointed fingers at previous administrations, claiming that the road rehabilitation carried out years ago failed to meet the required standards, while another group argued that the current government should have ensured regular maintenance of existing drainage systems.

Amid the exchanges, some users responded with humour, joking that residents might soon need canoes to navigate the flooded road.

The incident has reignited discussions about urban drainage management, environmental sanitation and road infrastructure maintenance in Enugu State.
