Hulk Hogan, the legendary figure who helped transform professional wrestling into a global entertainment phenomenon, has died at the age of 71, according to TMZ Sports.
Emergency responders were called to Hogan’s Clearwater, Florida home early Thursday morning following reports of a cardiac arrest. Witnesses at the scene reported multiple police and emergency vehicles, and Hogan was seen being transported from the residence on a stretcher before being placed into an ambulance.
Just weeks ago, Hogan’s wife, Sky, had dismissed online speculation that the wrestling star was in a coma, assuring the public that his heart was strong and that he was recovering well from recent surgeries.
Born Terry Bollea, Hogan was a driving force behind wrestling’s rise from a niche sport to a mainstream spectacle. With his magnetic charisma, towering presence, and broad appeal, Hogan became the face of WWE during the 1980s, captivating both children and adults around the world.
In a career-defining move in 1996, Hogan turned heel — shifting from hero to villain — and formed the iconic New World Order (NWO) faction under the name “Hollywood Hogan.” The transformation revitalized his career and helped usher in a new era in professional wrestling.
Hogan was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 but was removed in 2015 after the release of a secretly recorded tape in which he made racist comments. He later filed and won a high-profile lawsuit against the media company Gawker over the footage. WWE reinstated him in 2020, honoring him once again with a Hall of Fame induction as part of the NWO.
Outside the ring, Hogan also found success in entertainment. He made his Hollywood debut as Thunderlips in Rocky III (1982) and went on to star in films like No Holds Barred, Suburban Commando, and Mr. Nanny. In the 2000s, he and his family became reality TV stars in VH1’s Hogan Knows Best.
Hogan leaves behind a lasting legacy as both a trailblazer in professional wrestling and a larger-than-life pop culture figure whose impact on sports entertainment remains unmatched.
