The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed men who ambushed and killed two police officers along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state.

The directive was issued on Monday by the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, during an emergency security meeting held at the Command Headquarters in Awka.

The officers were reportedly attacked on Sunday night while returning from an assignment in a convoy operation that also involved the Chief of Staff to the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. The Chief of Staff was said to have escaped unharmed, although some civilians in the convoy sustained injuries during the attack.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the attackers laid an ambush in a bush along the road and opened fire on the convoy, causing panic among residents in surrounding communities.

One eyewitness, a tricycle operator, said he had to abandon his vehicle and flee after hearing sustained gunfire in the area.

Another witness described the scene as chaotic, noting that the officers were discovered lifeless beside their patrol vehicle after the shooting subsided.

Confirming the incident, Orutugu said the command had already begun investigations and intensified efforts to track down the assailants.

He ordered what he described as “Operation Fish Them Out,” directing tactical units to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice.

“I want results. The people of Anambra State must know that the police are fully in charge,” he said, stressing that the killing of officers would not go unanswered.

The police commissioner also warned members of the public to be cautious of individuals impersonating security operatives at checkpoints, noting that criminal elements have increasingly adopted such tactics.

He further described the Amansea–Ufuma axis as a vulnerable and isolated route, advising commuters to exercise heightened caution while using the road.

The Command assured residents that efforts were ongoing and expressed confidence that significant breakthroughs would be recorded in the coming days as investigations continue.
