The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Johnson Elleh, for allegedly creating and sharing a video containing false claims of kidnapping and bandit attacks along the Owode-Idiroko corridor in the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development on Wednesday, stating that the police launched an immediate investigation after the video gained traction online.
According to him, preliminary assessments and subsequent inquiries revealed that the claims made in the video were entirely unfounded and intended to incite fear, panic and public concern.
Babaseyi said investigators found no evidence of any kidnapping or banditry incident in the Owode-Idiroko area or surrounding communities as depicted in the footage.
He explained that detectives identified the suspect, who appeared in the video, and later apprehended him. Initial findings suggest that the content was deliberately fabricated and circulated to attract attention and generate online engagement.
The police spokesperson noted that such actions have the potential to cause public unrest, erode confidence in security agencies and disrupt social stability.
He added that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Command also cautioned individuals against spreading false security information, warning that anyone found responsible for disseminating misleading reports would face legal consequences.
Babaseyi assured residents that the police would continue to track, arrest and prosecute offenders, while urging the public to remain calm and rely only on verified information released through official channels.
