Troops of the Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), have uncovered an illegal crude oil refining camp hidden within the Orashi National Forest in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The development was revealed by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama in a post shared on X on Friday.
According to military sources, the discovery was made on June 3 during a coordinated anti-bunkering operation conducted by troops of the 16 Brigade, Garrison, and 5 Battalion.

The illegal refining site was located deep inside the forest reserve, where troops recovered several pieces of equipment used in illicit crude oil processing. Items found at the site included two large drum ovens, two cooling systems, two receiving containers, two waste pits, and a galvanized pipeline stretching approximately 100 metres.
Military authorities said the facility was actively being used for unauthorized petroleum refining operations.
The recovered equipment was subsequently handled in line with the operational guidelines of Operation Delta Safe.
The raid forms part of the military’s ongoing campaign against crude oil theft and illegal refining activities across the Niger Delta region. Security agencies say the operation is aimed at protecting critical oil infrastructure while reducing the economic and environmental impact of oil-related crimes.
Authorities further disclosed that surveillance and clearance operations will continue across the region as troops intensify efforts to identify, dismantle, and disrupt other illegal refining camps operating within the area.
