FG ENDS PRACTICE OF MANDATORY THREE-MONTH PRE-RETIREMENT LEAVE FOR CIVIL SERVANTS
The Federal Government has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to stop placing civil servants on a compulsory three-month pre-retirement leave, stating that such a requirement is not contained in the Public Service Rules (PSR).
In a circular issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, the government clarified that the three-month period before retirement is strictly a notice period and not a leave entitlement.
The directive followed concerns that some MDAs had been misinterpreting the rules by compelling officers to vacate their positions ahead of their official retirement dates.
The government explained that retiring officers are only required to give three months’ notice, attend a one-month pre-retirement workshop, and use the remaining period to regularise service and pension records while continuing to perform their official duties unless otherwise approved.
All MDAs have been instructed to end the practice immediately, ensure retiring officers remain at work during the notice period, and facilitate timely processing of retirement benefits and documentation.
