A young man identified as Success has reportedly died from injuries sustained after he was allegedly tortured by operatives of the Ogun State security outfit, So-Safe Corps, along Coca-Cola Road in the Oju-Ore area of Ogun State.
The incident, which has sparked outrage in the community, was first circulated on social media, with reports claiming that the deceased was taken into custody following a domestic altercation involving his mother before he was allegedly assaulted.
According to accounts shared online, the trouble began after a disagreement between Success, his mother and his younger brother at their residence, during which he reportedly sustained a head injury.
The situation was said to have been escalated when the mother reportedly invited So-Safe Corps operatives to intervene. However, rather than handing him over to the police, the operatives were accused of taking him to an uncompleted building where he was allegedly tortured.
“He was taken away from the area and allegedly beaten to death,” one social media user wrote, claiming the incident occurred after the intervention.
Another resident also alleged that the young man was assaulted until he died.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the So-Safe Corps, Adegunwa Adegbuyi, said the officers involved had been arrested and handed over to the police for investigation.
He said the operatives acted outside the standard procedures of the corps, noting that they were only expected to intervene and hand over suspects to the appropriate authorities.
“The mother called us to intervene… but unfortunately, they took the law into their own hands,” Adegbuyi said, adding that the corps leadership condemned the incident.
He further disclosed that the officers had been transferred to the Nigeria Police Force for prosecution, stressing that the commandant of the corps does not tolerate human rights abuses.
The corps also stated that its leadership had consistently warned personnel against abuse of power and interference in civil matters.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command has yet to issue an official response to inquiries on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
The development adds to growing concerns over alleged misconduct by some security operatives and calls for stricter accountability in handling civilian complaints.
